How to Make CBD Oil – A Step-by-Step Guide
Now that you have your ingredients ready, it’s time to get cooking. Just follow these four simple steps to make your own CBD-infused oil at home.

- 5-10 grams of high-CBD hemp flower
- 1 cup of carrier oil
- crockpot or double boiler

- Break up Your Flower
The first thing you’ll need to do is to break down your CBD flower into small pieces. If you have a grinder then this process is quick and easy, but otherwise, you can tear up the buds with your fingers or use a pair of scissors to chop it finely.
- Cook Your Flower
Next up, you need to convert the CBDA (the acidic precursor to CBD) contained within your flower into CBD by decarboxylating it. This process happens automatically when you smoke CBD flower, but when you’re making CBD oil you need to decarb it yourself by cooking it. There are some recipes that skip this step and call for a longer infusion time, but decarboxylating your flower will help you achieve more reliable results, as well as result in a more stable product.
Place your carrier oil and ground-up hemp flower buds into your crockpot (or the top section of your double boiler) and gently heat the mixture up. Use your thermometer to check that the temperature remains between 130 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit (don’t go over 200F) and cook your mixture in this manner for around 45-60 minutes.

Next up, you’ll want to allow your mixture to cool slightly so that you can safely strain all of the plant matter from it. Line a strainer with a piece of cheesecloth and carefully pour your CBD oil through it, squeezing out as much liquid as you can get through the cloth.

How to Achieve More Consistent Results
Putting your hemp flower through the decarboxylation process by cooking it isn’t an exact science. In fact, it’s estimated that it typically results in 70% of the cannabinoids decarboxylating properly.

If you want to make your CBD oil stronger next time, then you basically have three options. You can invest in a decarboxylator to ensure that all of the CBD is being fully activated. You could also shop around for a more potent CBD strain, or simply increase the amount of CBD flower you use in the recipe.
How to Make CBD Oil Taste Better
If you don’t like the distinct hempy taste of your CBD oil, then feel free to add your own flavorings. A couple of drops of essential oil (peppermint or citrus) will help mask the flavor, as will vanilla extract.
