Delta 10 vs Delta 8: What’s the difference between the two?

I have tried every type of THC available and have studied the differences that Delta 10 vs Delta 8 has in both effects and chemical structure.

D10 vs D8 THC go head-to-gead

Until just a few short years ago I had no idea that there was more than one type of THC and now I can barely keep up with all the different types!

If you (like me) are interested in THC, whether it be for recreational or medical purposes, it’s pretty important you get the differences between Delta 8, 9, and 10 explained because they differ wildly in terms of potency and effects.

I have tested both THC types side-by-side and in this article, I’m going to show you why Delta 10 vs Delta 8 are far more different than you’d think.

Delta 8 vs Delta 9 vs Delta 10

Delta 8, Delta 9, and Delta 10 all belong to a group of cannabinoids called tetrahydrocannabinols (THC). All three compounds have the same molecular formula but slight differences in their structures meaning that they differ in potency and effects due to their binding ability to receptors in your brain and body.

Each compound features a double bond on its carbon chain and the numbers 8, 9, and 10, simply signifies where that double bond is. D8’s double bond is between the 8th and 9th carbon chain, while Delta 9’s double bond can be found between the 9th and 10th carbon chain, and so forth.

What people used to simply call THC is, more specifically, Delta 9 THC. Delta 9 is one of the most abundant forms of THC in cannabis, making it the most famous and widely studied form of THC. It also has the strongest bonding affinity for cannabinoid receptors in the brain, making you feel more intoxicated than the other two Deltas.

However, Delta 8 and Delta 10 THC continue to be hugely popular cannabinoids for many reasons.

One of these reasons is that Delta 9 THC is just too strong and overwhelming for some people. A lot of people that suffer from anxiety and paranoia on Delta 9 find that they can enjoy Delta 8 and Delta 10 THC without the same side effects because they’re less potent.

Another reason they’re proving to be hugely popular is that they can elicit very different effects from Delta 9 THC and from each other.

Difference between Delta 8 and Delta 10

Both Delta 8 and Delta 10 are said to be roughly half as strong as Delta 9, but many people ask me, “is Delta 8 or Delta 10 stronger?”.

Delta 8 is certainly more popular than Delta 10 so is Delta 8 stronger than Delta 10 and does this make it better?

Delta 10 vs Delta 8: Potency

Having taken both Delta 8 and Delta 10 many times, I can tell you that I definitely find Delta 8 to have more potent psychoactive effects than Delta 10. And it’s not just me that’s feeling this difference as I’ve read other anecdotal reports that estimate Delta 10 to be around 20% less potent than Delta 8 (sounds about right).

So, if you want to get high and are wondering which will be better, then it’s Delta 8 all the way.

Delta 10 vs Delta 8: Benefits

If I had to recommend either Delta 8 or Delta 10 for pain, or recommend Delta 8 or Delta 10 for sleep, I would again choose Delta 8 on both occasions because pain and sleep problems, specifically, often require higher doses of cannabinoids for appropriate symptom relief.

However, if you were to ask me which is better for anxiety or stress, then I would say Delta 10, because it’s more uplifting and soothing with less intoxicating side effects.

Delta 10 vs Delta 8: Effects

Delta 8 and Delta 10 THC also elicit different effects. For me at least, Delta 8 is best enjoyed in the evening or at night. I feel very relaxed all over my body, sometimes get uncontrollable giggles, and have a tendency to get terrible munchies.

Like I said previously, Delta 10 is a much more uplifting and energizing experience and the fact that it’s a bit more subtle makes it more suitable for daytime use. It’s great for creativity, a quick boost in mood and a change in perspective.

ACS Labs said it best when they described Delta 8 and Delta 10 to be like remixes of your favorite song: “One is the dialed-down version, ideal for relaxing and vibing. The other is the upbeat edition that inspires an energetic boost.

How are Delta 8 and Delta 10 extracted?

Although Delta 8 and Delta 10 THC are both naturally occurring cannabinoids in cannabis and hemp plants, it may surprise you to know that the stuff you see for sale, whether it’s online or in store, is not extracted from either.

Delta 8 and Delta 10 exist in cannabis and hemp in such small amounts (less than 1%) that it’s just not viable to extract them from natural sources for commercial purposes. Instead we create them in a lab through a process called isomerization. Isomerization involves using chemical solvents or acids to change the molecular structure of one compound (in this case it’s usually CBD) into another.

This use of chemicals is why it’s imperative that this process needs to be carried out by experienced manufacturers that know how to purge their formulas properly. Otherwise there is a danger that the product could contain harmful residual solvents.

Responsible brands in this space will have their products tested for residual solvents and will be able to provide you with third-party certificates of analyses that verifies their purity, as well as their potency. If you want to learn more about the safety of Delta 8, then I explore the subject in more depth in another article “is Delta 8 safe?”.

Delta 10 vs Delta 8: The products

So, now you know enough about Delta 10 and Delta 8 to decide which will better suit your needs, what kind of products are available and where should you get them from?

When it comes to Delta 8 we’re very lucky to have a huge variety of Delta 8 THC products available to us, including Delta 8 gummies, flower (Delta 8 distillate is sprayed onto CBD or CBG flower), Delta 8 pre rolls, joints, and cigarettes, and Delta 8 vape carts and disposable vape pens.

Delta 10 isn’t quite as popular, so the product selection is generally confined to gummies and vaping products.

My favorite brands for Delta 8 and 10 include Galaxy Treats, Binoid, and Vance Global.

  • Galaxy Treats for their tasty gummies and large disposable vape bars (read my Galaxy Treats review here)
  • Binoid for their Delta 8 gummies and the huge variety of Delta 8/10 vape carts (read my Binoid review here)
  • Vance Global for their highly potent Delta 8 cigarettes, vapes, and gummies (read my Vance Global review here)

Delta 10 vs Delta 8: The final word

If you’re wondering which of these cannabinoids will be better for you, Delta 8 or Delta 10, then it really depends on what you’re trying to achieve or what experience you’re after.

If you just want to get as high as possible or if you’re looking for the most potent medicinal benefits, then Delta 8 will be the best option for you. If you’re looking for the best mood-booster and stress reliever, then you may find that you prefer and appreciate the Delta 10’s unique uplifting effects.

The fact is, both Delta 80 and 10HC offer a unique way to experience some of the psychoactive effects that are traditionally associated with cannabis, but without the same legal hurdles and adverse side effects.

If you still can’t decide between the two, then why not just try both and see for yourself? If you want to learn more about Delta 8 and Delta 10 THC, then you can do so in my other articles here:
